The excerpt shown is from Karam’s Design Journal 3 for his 3rd project. He has chosen to work on an argumentative essay about a physician’s obligation to report a crime. In this brief entry, Karam responds to a scholarly article he has read pertaining to the issue.

I affirmed that the article Karam chose was helpful to develop some background knowledge of the issue. I also appreciated that he had begun to think about rhetorical appeals and how they impact the argument for a reader.

In the 3rd Design Journal, students were asked to find artifacts that had taken up the same issue or problem as their own projects. They were encouraged to respond to the effectiveness of the artifact and analyze the way the writer/designer/speaker had employed rhetorical strategies. The image to the right is a screenshot of the 1st page of the article Karam chose to analyze, which was hyperlinked at the very top of his journal entry.
